Performance is the direct result of design and construction, and the design of the Model 23 was based on the known structural quality of a Swiss strike-fighter, the AFA P-16. The cabin of this smallest model Learjet seats up to nine persons, including pilots, and may be fully pressurized. The windshield and cabin windows are formed of stretched, laminated, acrylic plastic. The ailerons, elevators, and rudder are mechanically connected to the cockpit controls, while all trim surfaces are electrically operated. There is a small tab on the left aileron for roll and one on the rudder for yaw. The incidence angle of the horizontal stabilizer is changed for pitch trim control. The aircraft has spoilers for speed control on the upper surface of each wing panel forward of the flaps. These are actuated by hydraulic pressure, as is the fully retractable landing gear and multiple disc brakes on the dual mail wheels. As a matter of aerodynamic design, the fuselage narrows at each side as the wing and engine nacelles extend outward. This is a design concept known as "area rule" and is used to smooth the flow of air around these projections during high-speed flight.

On October 7,1963, prototype Model 23, N801L, made the first flight of a Learjet. This original airplane flew 194 hours during 167 separate flights until it was destroyed following a test flight in June 1964. N802L completed its maiden flight of 1 hour, 30 minutes on March 5, 1964, just 135 days after construction began. With the cross-continent flight of a Model 23 on May 21, 1965, Learjets began to set formally recognized performance records. On this particular flight, pilots John M. Conroy and Clay Lacey, flying with five observers, covered 5,005 statute miles from Los Angeles to New York and back in 11 hours, 36 minutes. On December 14, 1965, another Model 23, flown by Henry Beaird and Ronald G. Puckett, with five other persons on board, left Wichita to climb to and reach an altitude of 40,000 feet in 7 minutes, 21 seconds. With an engine thrust-to-weight ratio of 1:2.2 pounds, a Model 23 can out climb an F-100 Super Sabre to 10,000 feet, and can be just as impressive on the way down.

The success of the basic Model 23 design and the expansion of the corporate and personal jet market inspired a number of derivative models with increased range, size, and speed. Between May 23 and 26, 1966, the first Model 24, also the 150th production Learjet built, flew around the world and set or broke eighteen international aviation records. With Henry Beaird as pilot-in-command, Rick King and John O. Lear as alternates, and John Zimmerman as an observer, the flight of this aircraft covered a straight-line distance of 22,992.8 statute miles in 50 hours, 39 minutes of flight. Between May 17 and 19, 1976, during the American Bicentennial year, Arnold Palmer and James Bir flew a Model 36 from Denver, Colorado, to set a round-the-world speed record. The flight time over a specifically recognized course was 48 hours and 48 minutes for an average speed of 400.23 mph. Flying a Model 28 on February 19-20, 1979, Neil Armstrong set five world records for an aircraft of this class: two for altitude achieved, two for sustained flight at 51,000 feet, and one for high-altitude time-to-climb.

The Learjet was a technological advance and a research tool that was significantly involved in the creation of business jet aviation. Gates Learjet produced the Learjet line until 1987 and Bombardier acquired it in 1990.

The Museum's Learjet registration number N802L, is the second aircraft of this type built, and the first of the production model 23s. The factory retained it for continued testing and modification analysis until June 15, 1966, when, during testing of an experimental control-system modification, the aircraft encountered severe vibrations. This damaged the airframe and it was retired from flying status on June 17, 1966, after a total of 1,127 flying hours during 864 flights.

BOMBARDIER LEARJET 45 SUPER-LIGHT BUSINESS JET, CANADA
The Bombadier Aerospace Learjet 45 nine-seat super-light business jet was announced in 1992. Over 250 aircraft are in service. As well as the super-light Learjet 45, the rear engine Learjet business jet family includes the light Learjet 31A, and the midsize Learjet 60. In July 2002, two new additions to the family were unveiled: Learjet 40 light business jet and Learjet 45 XR. The four-passenger Learjet 40, with a maximum range of 3,339km, took its first flight in August 2002 and entered service in January 2004. An enhanced Learjet 40, the 40 XR, is due to enter service by the end of 2005. The Learjet 31A ceased production in 2003.

The Learjet 45 XR received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification in June 2004 and European certification in December 2004. 20 aircraft have been delivered. Compared to the Learjet 45, the Learjet 45 XR can carry eight passengers to a range of up to 3,704km. It can climb faster and has an increased maximum speed. The Honeywell TFE-731-20BR engine upgrade provides improved performance when operating in very hot or very cold conditions. The redesigned interior provides 15cm more legroom in the cabin, 5cm more seat width and more galley storage space.

Over 2,300 Learjets have been built and are in operation as corporate jets worldwide.

Bill Lear founded the American Aviation Corporation in 1960. The company, renamed the Lear Jet Corporation was transferred to Kansas in 1962 and one year later the original Lear Jet made its first flight. Facilities were also opened in Tucson, Arizona in 1967. Bombardier of Canada purchased the company in 1990 and the company became Learjet, Inc.

The Learjet 45 is certified by both the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), and it is approved by the regulatory agencies in more than 30 countries. It received certification for London City Airport in October 2004 and received full type approval the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in January 2005. Weighing only 35,000lb (15,874kg), the Learjet 45 is equipped with advanced flight software and architecture, such as an engine instrument and crew advisory system (EICAS) and on board maintenance diagnostics, to minimise pilot and maintenance workloads.

The fuselage is manufactured at the Bombardier Aerospace facilities in Belfast. De Havilland of Canada is responsible for the manufacture of the wings. Bombardier Aerospace Learjet in Wichita, Kansas, is responsible for final assembly, fitting, test and flight certification.

Learjet 45 jets can be specially configured and customised to be used for pilot training. Orders from Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Cathay Pacific Airways have been for use in a training role. A Learjet 45 provides VIP transport for the Irish Air Corps.

FLIGHT DECK

The aircraft is equipped with a Honeywell Primus 1000 four, 8in by 7in tube electronic flight and information system with a Primus 1000 digital autopilot and flight director, an engine instrument and crew advisory system (EICAS) and a Honeywell Primus 660 weather radar. The navigation and communications system is the Primus II. The aircraft can be fitted with a TCAS II Honeywell traffic alert and collision avoidance system.

The ergonomically-designed cockpit accommodates the two crew. The windscreen is fitted with an electric defogging and anti-icing system. The dual independent anti-icing and de-icing systems include engine bleed air anti-icing on the engine inlets, the wings and on the tailplane leading edges. An electric de-icing system is incorporated onto the pitot probes.

CABIN

The 6.11m² passenger cabin seats up to nine passengers in double-club seating. The cabin is fitted with swivelling recliner seats and tables and a galley with passenger facilities. The door at the port side front of the cabin has integral steps.

The 1.4m³ baggage compartment is heated. A Honeywell air conditioning and pressurisation system provides environment control.

ENGINES
The aircraft has two Honeywell TFE731-20 turbofan engines each providing 15.57kN (3,500lb) thrust at take-off. The engines are fitted with Dee Howard thrust reverters and digital electronic engine control (DEEC).

The aircraft has a Honeywell RE 100 auxiliary power unit.

PERFORMANCE

The aircraft has the ability to climb to the initial cruise altitude in 23mins 6s. The long-range cruise speed is 778km/hr and the maximum operating altitude is 51,000ft or 15,545m.

LANDING GEAR

The Learjet 45 has retractable tricycle type landing gear. The single nose wheel has steer-by-wire control and retracts forward. The twin wheel main landing gear units retract inwards and are fitted with anti-skid multiple-disc brakes.

LEARJET TRAINING CENTRE
On 11 April 2001, Bombardier Aerospace officially inaugurated its customer training center in Dallas/Fort Worth. Fully certified, the Center offers pilot and maintenance training for the Learjet 31A, the Learjet 45 and the Learjet 60.
